Take your daydream seriously

Some things you have to decide.
The rest you deliberately don't.

Thinking about taking some time off? Sabbaticals, hiatuses, breaks: they are a popular on-the-job daydream, and it makes sense. In the US, 48% of workers now worry AI could make some or all of their job duties obsolete, the highest share since that question was first asked in 2023, and 32% worry they could lose their job within weeks or months, up from 26% a year ago. Globally, 40% of employees say they felt a lot of stress the day before.* Change and uncertainty have become part of the daily life of so many people.

Hiatus takes it seriously. It is not possible for everyone, but it might be possible for you. I took some lessons from my own sabbatical and turned them into a simple way to take the first steps.

How this works

  • Pick the kind of break you want to take.
  • Answer a few short prompts.
  • Get a one-page brief you can hand to a partner, a boss or your future self.
  • Money and re-entry get real planning. The rest stays loose on purpose.
